예술이 숨 쉬는 주택 한 편, 아현동에서 그리 멀지 않은 만리동 언덕에는 예술의 이름으로 또 다른 이야기가 펼쳐지고 있다. '막쿱'은 협동조합형 공공 임대 주택으로 건물 3개 동에 20대 부터 60대까지 다양한 연령대의 예술가가 입주해 산다.

국내 최조의 예술인 공공 주택일 뿐 아니라 일종의 '대안 주거 프로젝트'다. 공고를 통해 미술, 건축, 영화, 연극 등 다양한 장르의 예술가 29가구가 선정됐고, 입주자들은 협동조합을 만들어 주거의 질을 높이되 비용을 줄일 방법을 함께 고민했다.

1인 가구부터 2인, 다인 가구까지 다양한 형태의 가족을 고려해 여러 평수로 설계한 것도, 1개 동에 공용 공간을 말들되 구름다리로 3개 동을 연결한 것도 입주자의 의견을 반경한 결과다. 회의나 강좌, 요리와 전시 등을 할 수 있는 공용 공간 외에 책을 읽거나 소모임을 할 수 있는 작은 도서관과 옥상 텃밭도 갖췄다. "조합원들이 의견을 모으고 역할을 분담해 공동으로 주택을 관리하고 있습니다. 승강기 관리와 청소는 물론, 망가진 곳을 수리하거나 아름답게 꾸미는 것도 모두 조합원의 몫이죠." 막쿱 입주자이자 홍보 이사를 맡은 안정숙 씨의 말처럼 막쿱은 공동체 정신을 유지하며 함께 사는 법을 배워 나가고 있다.

회색 톤의 건물은 군더더기 없이 소박하지만 언제든 공연장이나 전시장 역할을 할 가능성을 품고 있다. 마당의 정원과 복도, 층간 공간 등에 입주자들의 작품이 걸려 있고, '커뮤니티 공간'에는 캔버스와 물감 등 미술 도구가 언제든 작업할 수 있도록 갖춰져 있다. 아침마다 '한시 읽기' 모임이 열리는 작은 도서관에는 예술 관련 서적이 가득하다.

특이한 지점은 이곳에서 일어나는 모든 문화 활동이 입주자만을 대상으로 하는 게 아니라는 사실이다. 세 건물의 중앙에 있는 마당에서는 연중 공연이 열리고, 공용 공간에서는 지역 주민을 대상으로 워크숍과 강좌가 수시로 열린다. 지난해 '만리 아트 살롱'에서는 민화 그리기, 미술 상담, 액션 페인팅, 드림캐처 만들기 등 다양한 형태의 예술 강좌가 열려 많은 이들에게 큰 사랑을 받았다. 올해도 마을 간 세대 간 문화 격차를 줄일 다채로운 예술 활동이 이어질 예정이다

물론, 막쿱의 가장 큰 수혜자는 '행복한 동거'를 하는 조합원들이다. 입주자들은 예술적 영감을 주고받는 한편 누구보다 살가운 이웃사촌이 됐다. 건물을 둘러보는 동안 마주친 사람들은 그냥 지나가는 법이 없다. 반갑게 이름을 부르며 진행중인 작업에 관해 이야기를 나누고, 공용 공간에 모여 커피를 만들어 마신다. 그렇게 더불어 살아가는 행복을 만끽하는 사이 식구도 늘었다. 셋째 아이를 출산한 가정이 둘이나 되고, 올해 태어날 새 생명도 여럿이다. 불안정한 미래 때문에 결혼과 출산을 꺼리던 예술가들에게 일어난 의미 있는 변화다.

'목욕탕을 개조한 복합 문화 공간과 예술인 공동 주택이 얼마나 의미 있는 역할을 할 수 있을까?' 하는 의문이 든다면 막쿱 입주자인 조은만 작가의 말을 새겨들을 만하다. "철저히 개인화된 작업을 해 온 제게 공동체는 이룰 수 없는 꿈이었습니다. 오로지 내 작업이 중요하고, 내 그림이 소중했으리까요. 하지만 막쿱에서의 삶을 통해 작품이 아니라 함께하는 삶이 곧 예술임을 알게 됐습니다. 예술을 멀게만 느꼈을 지역 주민들과 교류를 이어나가 예술이 주는 행복을 함께 나누고 싶습니다." 예술의 기능 중 가장 중요한 것은 사람과 사람을 연결하는 일이라는 점에서 '두 개의 프로젝트'는 성공한 셈이다

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS Not far from Ahyeon-dong is Malli-dong, another neighborhood undergoing an artistic revival. Mallidong Artists Cooperative (MACoop) is a public housing complex currently occupied by 29 artists and their families. These artists work in a variety of fields, including the fine arts, architecture, film and theater. The cooperative, which helps keep their living costs down, is the first of its kind in Korea.

The builing's construction wias influenced by the opinions of its future occupants. There are units of many different sizes, from studios to family-sized spaces. There are also communal areas and pedestrian overpass that connects the three buildings of the cooperative. On the roottop is vegetable garden, and the complex's library hosts gatherings, exhibitions and classes. "The households that live here help maintain the complex togethere. Things like elevator maintenance, cleaning, repairing broken items and beautifying the space are all left in the hands of the cooperative's members." says Ahn Jeong-sook, a MACoop resident and its public relations manager.

What does a building full of artists look like? The complex's gray outer structure looks rather minimalist, but the front yard, garden and hallways feature art created by its occupants. The first-floor communal area provides art supplies so anyone can come in and paint. The library is filled with books on art and holds a Chinese poetry reading session every morning.

The cultural activities hosted at MACoop aren't reserved only for its residents. "Malli-dong, despite being in central Seoul, doesn't offer a lot of culture and art." says Ahn. "We pan to develop MACoop into a cultural cooperative that affects the lives of our neighbors."

MACoop's central yard, located in the middle of the complex's three buildings, hosts performances year-round. Recently, students from the nearby Seoul Design High School staged a fashion show here. Last year, the Manli Art Salon offered classes on folk painting, action painting and dream catcher making. This year, it plans to put on various art events that attempt to narrow the cultural gap between generations.

Of course, MACoop's biggest beneficiaries are its members. The know each other's names and say hello in the fallways, and they talk about their work while making coffee in the communal areas, And the MACoop family is continuing to grow; two of the households recently welcomed newborns.

"Being a part of a community seemed an impossible dream for me, as I've always worked alone. Only my work mattered." says artist and MACoop resident Cho Eun-man. "Living here, I've learned a lot about both art and life. I want to share the happiness that art brings people by working on projects for our neighbors and members of the public who feel that art isn't accessible." One of the most important roles of art is connecting people with one other. In this respect, Haenghwatang and MACoop are already masterpieces.
